Kokeshi dolls
Much like Russia, Japan also has a wooden doll without arms and legs. The dolls are called Kokeshis and they come from the Tohoku region on the north of Japan with the first of the dolls being made more than 150 years ago. Tohoku is also the region in Japan where the 2011 Japanese earthquake happened. They are handmade and were traditionally made to be the guardians of children. Their minimalistic structure includes a single trunk and a head with faces and clothing painted on. Miis which are digital avatars that can be created on modern Nintendo devices since the Wii in 2006 were inspired by Kokeshi dolls.
