Lord Mountbatten Assassination
Lord Louis Mountbatten was the 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma. He was Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh's uncle and Queen Elizabeth the 2nd's cousin. On 27 August 1979, the 79-year-old Lord Mountbatten and his teenage grandson were assassinated while lobster plotting with his family in Mullaghmore, Co Sligo in the Republic of Ireland where he was staying in Classiebawn. The boat he was using was bombed by the IRA as the Troubles were in full swing and the IRA's reason for killing him was because he was a member of the British Royal Family. Mountbatten died before he was brought to shore after being rescued by nearby fishermen. Mountbatten's body was repatriated to England where he was given a ceremonial funeral before being interred in Romsey Abbey.
Thomas McMahon was arrested for Mountbatten's assassination as he had traces of nitro-glycerine on his clothes as well as traces of fleck from the boat on the car he stole. He was convicted on 23rd November 1979 and was released under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.
In April 2018, Kate Middleton and her husband Prince William had a baby boy they named Louis, possibly a homage to the British Royal Family member who died within Irish waters.
