Arab Spring
Between 2010 and 2012, a number of protests, uprisings and rebellions flared up in the Middle East and North Africa, kick-starting in Tunisia after a man set himself alight in protest of the police corruption. It wasn't long before Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Bahrain, Syria, Oman, Palestine (consisting of the West Bank and Gaza territories), Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Djibouti, Sudan, Israel, Kuwait, Morocco and Mauritania were overcome with rebellion.
These rebellions happened because the people in North Africa and the Middle East wanted democracy, something they had been deprived of for a long time.
The wave of uprisings saw the birth of the Syrian civil war as well as civil war in Libya. Libya's leader Muammar Gaddafi was also killed after being overthrown but he was a dictator so no one mourns the wicked.
The protests in Djibouti, Palestine, Mauritania and Saudi Arabia were minor protests while Oman, Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait and Morocco changed their governments. These uprisings contributed to the collapse of Monarch Airlines in 2017 and Thomas Cook in 2019 whose popular destinations (Tunisia for Thomas Cook and Egypt and Syria for Monarch Airlines) were in the affected area, putting holiday makers off from going there.
