Costa Concordia Disaster

On 13 January 2012 at 9:44PM CEST, the Costa Concordia capsized while attempting to do a sail by salute at the coast of the Italian island of Giglio when it ran aground and capsized on its port. While many people scrambled to the starboard to escape via rope ladder, the ship's captain, Italian man Francesco Schettino decided not to be a good captain and go down with the ship and instead decided to abandon ship while 34 people died. He refused to return to the vessel by the Italian Coast Guard when he reached the shore and was arrested not long after. He now serves a 16 year prison sentence.
The ship was declared a total loss by the owners (Carnival Cruises) and their insurance company and after spending nearly 2 years adrift, the ship was re-floated in 2014 with the help of underwater platforms (in 2013) and buoyancy tanks which allowed it to be taken to Genoa port where it was dismantled for scrap metal with the process being completed in 2017.
