Brazilian Independence

Having spent 4 centuries under Portuguese rule, Brazil wanted to be independent. The only Portuguese controlled state in South America declared its independence on 7 September 1822 but they faced a problem, Portugal wasn't ready to let go Brazil so easily and thus a war broke out which lasted for over 2 1/2 years. The outcome saw not only Brazil emerge as the independent Empire of Brazil but another country emerged, the Spanish speaking nation of Uruguay.
