Munich Massacre (5 Sept 1972)
50 years before hosting the 2022 European Championships, the German city of Munich hosted the Olympics in 1972. On 5 September 1972, a Palestine based terrorist organisation called Black September stormed the Olympic Village (sleeping and living quarters for the athletes during the games) and killed 2 of the Israeli Olympic team members. Black September then took the remaining nine under hostage control. Why?
They did this due to the ongoing border conflicts between Palestinian territories and Israel which is also steeped in ethnic conflict.
In the end, the remaining Israeli team members were killed on helicopters that were blown up at the local Fürstenfeldbruck NATO airbase on 6 September 1972. It took until the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Games for the victims which also included a West German police officer who was also killed to be memorialised with a moment of silence. Steven Spielberg directed a film about the massacre called Munich which came out in 2006 and one of the victims of the massacre, David Mark Berger had his gravestone featured in the 12th Viewer Special video of the Hollywood Graveyard YouTube series
