How the Vietnam War began
After the Second World War concluded there was a great expense when it came to European colonies in Africa and Asia. South America would've been included except for the events of the 1810s and 1820s. The expanse being does colonialism was becoming too costly so many colonies were granted independence while they were fighting for or want it or weren't too pushed about it. And by not too pushed by it, I mean there is still wanting independence just doing it peacefully. France had Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam on the one colony called French Indochina. All citizens of French Indochina had their own identity ethnically, culturally and linguistically and wanted independence. For this fact, let's chat about Vietnam who fought for independence only to end up in the Vietnam War or as they call it, the American war on account of who they were fighting against.
Vietnam broke free first from French Indochina in 1945 and as result and 8 year war called the first Indochina War began. Pause the end of this war Cambodia followed by Laos also broke free and by 1954, French Indochina was completely decimated, leaving 3 new nations in its place. The fight for Vietnamese Independence was supported by both Democrats and communists. The communists were led by Chiang Kai-Shek and were supported by Russia, the leading country in the Soviet Union. While the democrats on the other hand, were dominated by the rich and the military. The country the Communist trains group throughout the entire country of Vietnam formed the basis of the the guerrilla fighters that will become known as the Viet Cong. There was a national support for communists as they believe they would be under a classless system where wealth was shared. This was the idea presented with communism until many years after enactment (see also: Glasnost and Perestroika) On the other hand, the Democrats in Vietnam were indifferent how the ordinary people felt and thought. The conflict of ideologies inevitably lead to war. This horrified the Americans who had the domino Theory: if one country fell to communism, all the others would soon follow.
In fact, while we are talking about Vietnam here, it's about time that I mention that they were two Vietnams. With Ho Chi Minh's DRV party in the North and the state of Vietnam in the South, Negotiator meeting in Geneva Switzerland and in 1954, a document was signed by the Republic of Vietnam, France, China, the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom that saw Vietnam being divided in half. This was done to appease both of the Communist side and the democratic side of those who wanted independence from France. This is kind of like what happened with Korea minus both sides being occupied by both America and the Soviet Union. Of course, just like North Korea, North Vietnam wanted to dominate the whole country. On 1st November 1955, the second Indochina War AKA, the Vietnam War began with American support coming in the mid 1960s.
