Romanian Revolution
After 42 years under communist rule, complete with a cult of personality of the nation's leader Nicolae Ceausescu and all activities being strictly controlled by the Party activists, the Romanians had enough and wanted to be free. It was the perfect time as well as the Berlin Wall came down a month before and the Solidarity movement in Poland led to the end of communism in Poland. It started out with protests in Timisoara which the Ceausescus (Nicolae and his wife Elena) tried to stop by shooting the protesters. Throughout the protests the communist insignia was cut out of the Romanian flag as an anti-communist and anti-Ceausescu symbol. Ceausescu gave a speech on 21 December 1989 to a huge crowd of communist supporters. By supporters, we mean a crowd of people who now hated him and were booing him and the televised speech showed how unpopular he had become. After fleeing on 22nd December, Ceausesus were put on a trial that was more or less them being shamed for their mistreatment of the nation which then saw them being gunned down on Christmas Day (25 December) 1989.
After these events, Romania eventually moved to a complete dismantlement of communism.
